sophie-carina 1-2

Posted on Thursday, October 7th, 2010 | No Comments »

It was a great day on Wednesday for the Matadors. Sophie Hartley won the race in impressive style by completing the 3.0 mile course in 17:31. Soon after she was followed by second place finisher and teammate Carina Novell. The pair raced together for the first two miles and their teamwork paid off. Sophie and Carina are the first two girls to break 18 minutes at Shadow Cliffs for Granada. Maryann Gong completed the course in fifth place and Kelsey Girardelli took ninth. In only her third race for GHS, freshman Sarah Franklin completed the varsity scoring. The girls top five averaged 18:29, one minute and eleven seconds faster than any GHS team before them. The varsity girls are now 7-0 in EBAL standings and are undefeated so far this season.

The varsity boys are now 2-5 in league, defeating Foothill and California. Despite the record, the boys have been running incredibly well with 12 boys breaking their personal records. Sixteen boys raced the 3 mile course for the first time, including Nick Winter and Tyler Menniti who were in the top seven. Grant Salk (16:22), Patrick Patterson (16:50), and Spencer Jeppson (16:55) broke the seventeen minute barrier for the first time.

There were many first time racers for Granada including: Claira Curtis, Sydnie Harvest, Timothy Anaya, Anirudh Bokka, Royal Moline, Wyatt Johnson, and Joseph Rojas. Congratulations Matadors!

Race data for GHS athletes is posted under the results tab.

Granada is taking the varsity runners to the Brea Invitational this week. This meet is put on by Coach Mattern’s brother who is a teacher and coach at Brea-Olinda High School. The race features unique formatting by racing 3 races per level as follows:
Your #1-2 runners will run against all other 1-2 runners.
Your #3-5 runners will run against all other 3-5 runners.
All others (#6, 7, ++++) will run in one race.

Scoring: Your top 5 times in each level, regardless of which race they were in, will be added for a team

Posted on Saturday, September 4th, 2010 | No Comments »

It’s not too late to join the best team ever! We had five new people join at the end of last week and we’re ready for more. Our team has over 50 people on it and we’re always doing fun things like eating cereal after practice, movie nights, team meals, and much more.

You can speak with Coach Mattern directly in his classroom #309 or send him a message through the contact form on this site. We hope to meet you soon!

Tuesday, September 7 kicks off the start of the racing season for the Matadors at the Monte Vista Invitational. This is a 2.0 mile course that features an intense hill known as the “Eliminator.” Runners who are new to the team will earn their uniforms by completing the course without walking. The Matadors are geared up for the 2010 cross country season and so is our new web design. On Monday, August 23, the first day of school we begin our new practice schedule. The team will meet at Granada’s snack shack on the track from 3:25pm to 5:25pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. We will meet at Independence Park on Wednesday from 3:25pm to 5:25pm on Saturday.

Please check the team calendar on the tools link to keep posted of time and location changes. In addition to team practices and meets it will also have information regarding team functions, team meals, and the team picture day.

You can now find an updated photo gallery with a slideshow under the tools link. There is a lot of great stuff on the website and I will be updating with new posts and edits as much as possible. Keep checking back for the latest information.
