The Granada Girls Cross Country team had a great race in the DI State Championships with four of the top five running season best efforts. Freshman sensation Sophie Hartley ran an impressive 18:05 for 16th place. Carina Novell raced to an 18:21 and Maryann Gong finished with an incredible 18:27! The Matadors are one of only two teams in the top 25 in the state that return their entire lineup for the 2011 season.

The team awards banquet is held on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at the Student Union at Granada High School from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.  All family members are welcome to attend.

The team awards banquet is a potluck.

Seniors – bring dessert for 15

Juniors – bring a main dish for 10

Sophomores – bring a main dish for 10

Freshmen – bring salad and dressing for 10 or bring a main dish for 10

Everyone should bring serving utensils with their dish.

We will need everyone’s help to clean up after the dinner.  There will be a slideshow, we will honor each and every single runner, we will acknowledge the team accomplishments, and we will distribute team awards.  It will be fun!

If you could use the contact form to let Coach Mattern know how many family members will be attending and what dish you’re going to bring I would greatly appreciate it.

NCS Victory!

The lady Mats had a terrific day in the rain at Hayward HS. Here’s the play by play. Sophie and Carina ran together in the 3rd and 4th place for the first 1.5 miles. Maryann and Kelsey ran together in the 6th and 7th spots for about that same amount of time. Sarah Franklin ran most of the race in about 22nd with Alyssa and Laura around 40-50th. There was lots of slipping on all the hills and inclines as the course had become extremely slick from the previous races. With 1.25 miles to go Sophie and Carina overtook a Cal runner and Sophie started to make a move to catch the CV girl. Maryann broke away from Kelsey and passed a girl to put her into 5th place. Kelsey had a pack of girls on her and running in about 8th place. Sarah, Alyssa, and Laura maintained their positions. Sarah had a few AV and CP runners with her. Sophie finished the race in 18:12 and second place, the fastest time ever for GHS and on a day when it was projected that their race was about 40 or more seconds slower for the runners. Carina placed third and the second fastest time ever for GHS in 18:21. Maryann took 5th in 18:35 with a very strong race. Kelsey had a huge last half mile, pulling herself up to 6th place with a tremendous finishing kick and time of 18:50. Sarah finished out the scoring with a sub 20 minute performance and 26th place.

The girls won with a score of 42 points, CP had 83 points and AV had 88 points. Four girls medaled individually! The team will have the honor of preparing for the CIF State Championships on Saturday, November 27. Come cheer them on.

The boys team finished in their ranked position at 7th place. By the time they raced the course conditions were even worse than when the girls raced and times suffered just the same. The boys will be one of the only top teams in DI next year that return five varsity runners which include: Grant Salk (JR) 17:13, Patrick Patterson (JR) 17:20, Spencer Jeppson (SO) 17:29, Nikolas Winter (SO) 17:30, and Tyler Menniti (JR) 17:48. We will also have alternate Joseph Burton (SO) who was our 5th runner at EBAL.

Mariner 2010

Great races as usual for the Matadors. Due to the PSAT, the only complete team was our FS boys. Many fast performances on an extremely difficult course (it features a hill known to me in high school as “baby demon”). Coach Whichard started the day with an intense victory in the coaches’ race as he ran strong and out kicked three less seasoned runners. His win was very inspiring for the Mats. Natalie Cruz was Granada’s first frosh-soph girl to cross the finish line and she was followed by Claira Curtis. In the large school varsity girls’ race Brittany Mumford led the way for sister Kirsten and teammate Marlene Robleto. Cris Lewczyk and Jaxson Kovacs represented GHS in the large school varsity boys race and it was their first time to Garin. The frosh-soph boys race saw strong performances from Tyler Neabeack, Austin Horning, Jack Kovacich, Anirudh Bokka, and Albert Yeh. In addition several first year runners burned up the course including Kylie Manchester, Royal Moline, Joseph Rojas, Kevin Girardelli, and Wyatt Johnson.

Check out the results link for all the statistics. Go Mats!
